May 7th, 2017, was a beautiful, sunny day for our second annual 5k road race–S.O.S. Stepping Out Sepsis–in honor of Emily Edwards. Emily’s life was cut short from this horrible silent killer and her story can be found on the Rory Staunton Foundation web page. We started this road race as a way to honor and remember Emily but we also wanted to be a part of raising awareness of sepsis and to help stop other preventable deaths. In our two years of running this road race we have had over 170 participants. These people are now educated about the signs and symptoms of sepsis and about our drive to make Massachusetts a state with mandatory sepsis protocols. We know they will in turn reach out and educate others. We were humbled to have Ciaran Staunton attend our race this year, sharing his family’s story as well as the hard work the Foundation is doing to make positive change.
We are so grateful to all of our road race supporters and donors who have made this platform possible. There has been great local support from many companies and organizations, especially the Centraville Sportsman’s Club of Dracut, MA, who have graciously hosted our event for the past two years and their many members who have volunteered each year to help make the race a success.
Stepping Out Sepsis 5k raised $5,500 this year to benefit the Rory Staunton Foundation. This was an amazing donation made possible by all of our supporters. Our race had many fun raffle items including a team autographed Boston Bruins hockey stick as well as four tickets to a Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots game (Blitz for Six!) We are so grateful to all of our racers, walkers, volunteers, donors and listeners to our cause. In two years time we have donated over $9,000 to the Rory Staunton Foundation. As we are very proud of this fundraising, we are also proud of our efforts to continue educating the public about Sepsis by sharing Emily’s story along with Rory’s, in hopes of stopping preventable deaths from sepsis.
We will be continuing our efforts and planning our 3rd Annual S.O.S. for 2018. If you would like to learn more please visit our Face book page at www.facebook.com/SteppingOutSepsis and check out our webpage at steppingoutsepsis.com.
